Safeguarding Children
Here is the text of the band's Child Protection Policy:

Brampton Community Band
Child Protection Policy and Procedures

Brampton Community Band exists to provide an opportunity for musicians to meet regularly and enjoy the experience of making music collaboratively.

Brampton Community Band fully accepts its duty to assist the Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board in ensuring that children and young people throughout Derbyshire are kept safe and have their needs met.

Policy

The objective of our Child Protection Policy is to help keep children and young people safe by
• providing a safe environment for children and young people
• being aware of children and young people who are likely to suffer significant harm (physical, emotional, neglect or sexual) and take appropriate action with the aim of making sure that they are kept safe.

Children and Young People participating in the Brampton Community Band do so with their parent’s permission. A Parental Consent Form (see Appendices) indicates that parents are aware of the Brampton Community Band’s Child Protection Policy and that they accept the Procedures set up to ensure Children’s safety.

The parents of any child/young person under the age of 14 participating in the band’s activities will designate, on the Parental Consent Form, a “responsible adult” (age 18+) who will act in loco parentis for that child/young person during band activities. That adult could be the child’s parent who may also participate in band activities or simply attend and listen, or may be another adult in the band whom the family has designated.

The Brampton Community Band has a Designated Senior Person (DSP) for Child Protection. The DSP is Peter Gray. (As a permanently employed Teacher with Derbyshire County Council LEA, Peter Gray is in receipt of regular and appropriate training.) See Appendix 3.

All members of the Brampton Community Band accept a pastoral duty towards children and young people participating in the band’s activities. This document is brought to the attention of all members of the Brampton Community Band.

Code of Practice

It is expected of all members of the band that discrimination, prejudice and oppressive behaviour are not acceptable. We will all promote an environment where children are listened to and respected as individuals.

Procedures

In the event of a member of the band having a child protection concern about a child/young person s/he will immediately inform the DSP and record accurately the event(s) giving rise to the concern.

When listening to children we try to

• Stay calm and don’t show signs of shock or surprise.
• Listen to the child, rather than directly question him or her; don’t ask leading questions.
• Never stop a child who is freely recalling significant events, and try not to interrupt them.
• Make a note of the discussion, taking care to record the timing, setting and personnel present, as well as what was said.
• Record all subsequent events up to the time of any later interview.
• Take children’s disclosures seriously.

We will adopt the procedures laid out in the Derby and Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Procedures document. See www.derbyshirescb.org.uk/procedures/

Equality and Diversity

All children have equal rights to protection and we recognise the additional vulnerability of some children and the extra barriers they may face getting help because of their sex, ethnicity, culture, social backgrounds, abilities, sexual orientation and religious beliefs.

Any discriminatory, offensive or violent behaviour is unacceptable and will be acted upon.

2. Notes for Parents

Dear Parents,

One of my main aims in setting up the Brampton Community Band was to involve children and young people. My own musical confidence and skills were greatly enhanced by the opportunities I had to play alongside older musicians. I hope this will be the case for children playing with the band.

The Brampton Community Band’s Child Protection Policy and Procedures have been drawn up with practicality and reasonableness firmly in mind.

After consultation with the Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board, I decided that it would be possible to include children under 14 years old in the band by means of a system of “designated adults” who will act in loco parentis while children are involved in band activities.

I hope that you will feel that an appropriate balance has been struck between ensuring the safety of children and young people while still allowing them to participate in the sessions.

Please complete the attached form and send it in to me.

Yours,

Peter Gray
